VISC has an incentive to have trained and engaged youth and adult referees, to make sure the club’s home games have a capable and complete referee crew. The certification and coursework requirements to referee a U8 game are no different than to referee a BU19 or GU19 game, but perhaps not so obviously, the club works to make sure referees gain experience to build up to such a role by refereeing younger games and working as both a center referee and assistant referee.
Vashon referees are also encouraged to book games off-island, and often do this as a team with other Vashon referees, calling two or three games in a row to make the trip off-island more worthwhile. Overall, the earning potential for refereeing is good, once the costs for the certification and uniform are recouped. US Soccer recommends that referees are at least thirteen years old.
Training has been available in the past on-island in August, but not every year. There are multiple training classes in Seattle - it is a one-day class.
